Post-doctoral position : modeling the coupling the mammalian circadian clock to metabolism

CONTEXT

Our team develops mathematical models to understand the dynamics of biological functions and their design principles. We work both on data-driven models, in close collaboration with biologists, and minimal models capturing general principles. Much interest is given to circadian clocks, which synchronize to environmental cycles and orchestrate numerous biological events in living systems.

SUBJECT

We seek a post-doctoral researcher to study how the mammalian circadian clock couples to metabolism and understand how disruptions in this coupling lead to diseases such as diabetes. A first mathematical model of the liver clock synchronized to feeding/fasting cycles has been obtained. We plan to extend it and to apply it to other tissues such as muscle, skin or adipocytes. Research will be conducted in close collaboration with the groups of Bart Staels and Hélène Duez at the European Genomics Institute for Diabetes (EGID) in Lille, an internationally leading center in the study of metabolic diseases. Besides this project, there are also opportunities to work on the modeling of the circadian clock of a microscopic green alga, Ostreococcus tauri, in an environmental perspective. We have a long-standing collaboration with the group of François-Yves Bouget at Observatoire Océanologique de Banyuls/mer, in the south of France, who has identified the central clock genes of this new model organism.

PROFILE

Candidates are expected to have a good background in nonlinear dynamics and/or applied mathematics as well as in computational and mathematical biology, in the context of cellular regulatory networks. A significant programming experience is also required (preferably C/C++ or similar languages under a linux environment). Since the
candidate will interact closely with our collaborators, and with experts in biophotonics or microfluidics, excellent communication skills and a capacity to work in an interdisciplinary environment are required.

APPLICATION

The contract is for one year, extendable for a second year. The monthly net salary is about 2200 euros ( after paying health insurance fees but before income tax).
